Smoke Detector Program

Smoke detectors are real protectors!

Most fire fatalities are a direct result of not having a working smoke detector in the home. As reported by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the U.S. Fire Administration: More than 4,000 Americans die each year in fires and approximately 25,000 are injured. These numbers do not include emergency personnel. Most fire fatalities occur in the middle of the night when residents are asleep.

The City of Lebanon Fire Department will provide and install as many smoke detectors as necessary to City residents who meet certain requirements by appointment. Smoke detectors are provided through grants and donations to the Lebanon Fire Department for installation.

If you would like further information regarding smoke detector numbers and locations in your home or if you would like to make an appointment to have a smoke detector installed in your home, please call the Lebanon Fire Department at 417-532-2104, or e-mail us.

Note: Besides smoke detectors it is also recommended to install carbon monoxide detectors on each level of your home as well as an escape ladder for multi-story homes.

Home Safety

Home safety is one of the biggest responsibilities parents and homeowners have, and thankfully, many safety measures are easy to implement. There’s nothing difficult, expensive, or time consuming about minimizing the risks in your home.

The basics of fire safety: prevention, education, detection, and response. None of them are very expensive, and most don’t take any time at all. You should always have fire safety on your mind, and be keeping an eye out for fire hazards and unsafe practices. Train your children in the basics of fire safety, and have rules for friends and family when they visit.

One Key thing you can do is Make a Fire Escape Plan:
  • Practice escape plans every month
  • Plan two ways out of each room
  • Immediately leave your home
  • Never open doors that are hot to the touch
  • Designate a meeting location away from your home
  • Once you're out, stay out!
